Casino Hotel Insurance Controversy: Potawatomi Claims Denied for Flooded Vehicles in Valet Garage

Potawatomi Casino Hotel Insurance Denies Claims for Vehicles Flooded in Valet Garage

The Potawatomi Casino Hotel, located in Milwaukee, recently found itself at the centre of a controversial insurance claim controversy following unprecedented flooding in August 2025. The casino’s insurance provider has stated that they bear no responsibility for the damage that occurred during this natural event.

Dubbed a “once in a thousand years event” by weather forecasters, this significant storm unleashed over 10 inches of rain throughout the Milwaukee metro area in a mere 48 hours. The storm was attributed to a rare weather pattern specifically affecting the western shores of Lake Michigan. Residents had little warning, as forecasts only anticipated the storm the day before the rain began.

Impact on the Potawatomi Casino Hotel

The flood resulted in substantial damage; hundreds of vehicles parked at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel were severely affected, with many labelled as total losses. Notably, the underground valet parking area faced the brunt of the impact, resulting in significant water damage. Those who had self-parked vehicles on the first level of the six-story parking structure also experienced water-related damages.

Owners were only permitted to retrieve their vehicles on August 14th, and upon inspection, many found their cars in poor condition, prompting them to file insurance claims.

Challenges for Underinsured Vehicle Owners

Reports indicated that the majority of standard auto insurance policies do not typically cover flood damage. Only comprehensive insurance policies offer protection for such water damage, which extends to hail, theft, and fire as well. This creates potential issues for those who rely on basic auto policies.

  • Comprehensive Insurance: Covers various incidents, including flood damage.
  • Standard Policies: Often exclude flood damage, leaving many owners financially vulnerable.

Roger McGee, a casino guest who used the valet service, shared his experience regarding the rejection of his insurance claim. McGee claimed that the casino should have moved his car to a safer location as the floodwaters approached, reaffirming the potential liability of the casino.

Following his complaint, McGee was informed by Tribal First, the insurance provider for the casino, that his claim had been denied. They referenced the unprecedented environmental event without negligence on their part as their basis for rejecting the claim.

“The cause of this loss was due to an act of nature. Our investigation showed neither negligence nor liability. While we regret any incident a patron may have had and certainly sympathize with any difficulty this incident may have caused you, we must respectfully deny your claim,” stated the rejection letter.

Coincidentally, the letter was signed by an adjuster with the same last name as the claimant, leading to further intrigue.

Total Damage from the Flood

The flooding has had tragic consequences in Milwaukee, with recent reports revealing that at least 51 homes were destroyed. More than 4,500 buildings, both residential and commercial, sustained damage. Monetary estimates suggest the storm caused $43 million in infrastructure damage and $21 million in property damage. Unfortunately, the floods also resulted in three suspected fatalities, due to drowning and carbon monoxide poisoning.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictable nature of extreme weather and the importance of adequate insurance coverage. Vehicle owners are encouraged to review their policies to ensure sufficient coverage in the event of natural disasters.

Summary

The significant flooding at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel highlighted the vulnerabilities associated with inadequate auto insurance coverage during natural disasters. Many vehicle owners found themselves in dire financial straits as standard insurance policies failed to cover flood damage. This unfortunate incident underscores the necessity for thorough policy reviews and reminders about the unpredictable impacts of climate events.
