Atlantic City Casinos Unite to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As the month of October arrives, the spotlight shifts toward Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period dedicated to championing life-saving research and the importance of early detection. In a powerful show of community support, the Atlantic City casinos are joining forces to turn the spotlight on this vital cause, proving that even in the world of gaming, compassion and advocacy remain a top priority.

Established in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical company Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca), October has been recognised as the national month for breast cancer awareness. This year, Atlantic City casinos have rolled out numerous initiatives to support this crucial initiative.

“Breast cancer affects families throughout every community, and thanks to advances in detection and treatment, survival rates continue to grow. Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Atlantic City casinos come together with our employees, guests, and the broader community to raise awareness and shine a light on this essential cause,” said Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) and Resorts Casino Hotel.

Giannantonio further stated, “Atlantic City casinos remain committed to supporting groundbreaking research, promoting early detection, and ensuring care for all those affected by this disease.”

Lighting Up in Pink

This October, Atlantic City casinos are adorned with pink lights atop their hotel towers and on their facades to signify support for breast cancer awareness. The colour pink has become synonymous with this cause; it gained popularity in 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure started handing out pink ribbons.

Participating casinos include:

  • Borgata
  • Caesars Entertainment (Caesars, Harrah’s, and Tropicana)
  • Ocean Casino Resort
  • Hard Rock Hotel and Casino
  • Resorts Casino Hotel

At Golden Nugget, male employees are competing in fundraising efforts while wearing pink, aiming to raise money for breast cancer research.

Moreover, Hard Rock is offering a special pink cocktail during the month, with part of the proceeds directed towards breast cancer support. Caesars is running a similar campaign, donating $1 from each pink drink sold to the American Cancer Society’s Men Wear Pink initiative. Resorts is also serving a pink cosmopolitan where proceeds go toward the same cause.

Furthermore, Golden Nugget is providing donated gaming vouchers to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative, while Resorts contributes its voucher buckets to the Men Wear Pink program of Greater Philadelphia.

Additionally, Borgata and Caesars properties are offering complimentary on-site mammogram screenings for their staff.

Breast Cancer Statistics

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, aside from skin cancers. It accounts for approximately 30% of all new female cancers annually, according to the American Cancer Society.

Current statistics show >4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., including those currently undergoing treatment and those who have completed treatment.

The five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer (the earliest stage) is greater than 99%. In contrast, the five-year survival rate for patients with distant metastatic breast cancer is approximately 32%.

Conclusion

As October unfolds, the collaborative efforts of Atlantic City casinos highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness and support. Their commitment helps to foster community involvement and promotes a message of hope and solidarity among those affected by the disease.
